Fresh Fish and Bread

Read Time 2 Minutes

There is a quote that I particularly like in my favorite children’s book by C.S. Lewis where Mr. and Mrs. Beaver are sitting down to a meal with the four children. Mr. Beaver and the boys had just caught fresh fish and the line goes like this… “All the children thought—and it is a common opinion—that there’s nothing to beat good freshwater fish if eaten when it has been alive half an hour ago and has come out of the pan half a minute ago.”

I know a little something about that mouth-watering taste, as I caught a rainbow trout at 8 years old while staying with a great aunt and uncle in Cody, Wyoming. We pan cooked that fish for breakfast and had fresh sliced tomatoes on the side. It is a special memory I have always remembered.

This morning, that memory came back to me as I was reading a favorite Bible passage in John 21. Jesus had risen after His crucifixion and had begun making appearances to some of his disciples. In this particular encounter, some of His disciples were fishing and had not caught anything all night long. In the morning Jesus was standing on the shore with a coal fire and bread. He instructed them to throw their net down on the right side, and of course, they caught an enormous catch. They knew immediately that it was Jesus! Peter jumped in the water and swam in excitement towards shore and towards Jesus. Jesus cooked some of their fresh fish and the bread over the open fire and fed them!

Can you imagine Jesus cooking over an open fire for you? I picture a nice crusty piece of artisan bread with some olive oil for dipping and the taste of fresh fish like that fish I caught at 8 years old. The fish that Jesus would be serving would be so much better than that experience though because Jesus Himself would be serving it to me!

While we may not get to have that kind of physical encounter with Jesus today, I realized this morning that our spiritual encounter each morning can be just as dynamic and fulfilling! Every morning when we wake up, Jesus is there. He is there with His new mercies, He is there with provisions for the day, He is there to meet all our needs, and He is there to walk and talk with us! Our night before or day before might have been a difficult one just like the disciples had worked all night and not caught fish. But every morning, Jesus is there to meet us, feed us, and begin a fresh start!

“And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

We can meet Jesus every morning for breakfast and feast with Him on His word and through prayer. He will be there to feed us if we just jump in that water and swim to Him!

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23

A New Chapter

Read Time 2 Minutes

When I began my blog in 2019, I had just retired from a 28 year teaching career and began a new one as a personal trainer. It was a new and exciting chapter in my life. My desire for my blog was to provide comprehensive encouragement to live a healthier and happier life. As a personal trainer, I wanted to share helpful ways to engage in physical activities and promote other healthy habits. As a Christ-follower, I absolutely know that you cannot be completely whole and have optimal wellness without walking closely in your relationship with God. Therefore, my goal was to creatively put these together to encourage physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual soul-wellness.

All of those goals are still very important to me; however, as I have been living out another new chapter in my life the past year and a half, my blog has begun to take a natural shift. After 5 years of thoroughly enjoying being a personal trainer and helping many women and seniors, I have chosen to not continue the service as a practice. I am still very much dedicated to a healthy life of exercise and good eating habits and still encourage others to engage in this lifestyle. I’m still happy to give helpful tips and advice as appropriate, but I feel God has led me to focus on another calling. It’s time to focus on just being available to my husband, our adult children, and our aging parents as well as my church family. God has shown me that there is much to do in these areas.

Writing is a pleasure for me, and I want to continue as God leads in this area of my life. I’ve noticed over the past year that my writing has focused more on the spiritual walk and sharing stories and experiences from my life that can be used to encourage others as well as spread joy and light. That is my new goal for my blog, and I look forward to ways that God will inspire me to share. I am thankful that my writing has touched some, and I hope that it will continue to have an impact in some small way. I appreciate all who have taken the time to read my writing and encouraged me also! I look forward to the mutual encouragement going forward in this latest chapter of life!

My blog is titled, “True-Vine-Living, and it is true that I can do nothing apart from Him! My desire is to always stay connected to the ONE TRUE VINE and share Him with others!

 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”  John 15:4-5

“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 15:11
